HUMILITY

Petaga Yuha Mani (Pete Catches) was a Medicine Man of the Oglala Lakota people. He brought the sacred practice of the Sundance back to the people when it was still outlawed and punishable with 10 years imprisonment. He said:

“Wakan Tanka (the Great Spirit) made me as I am. And when I want to serve, I give it all that I have…. I wanted the Great Spirit to bless this Pipe. By blessing this Pipe I wanted Him to bless me too, so that this Pipe and me would be like one; that whatever I did with this sacred Pipe, the Great Spirit would listen. Many times throughout my life I asked the Great Spirit to do something that is almost impossible, but being humble, being lowly, feeling unworthy, He grants me what I ask of Him. This is what makes me a medicine man.”
