Three months before her deadly encounter with the Texas police, Sandra Bland reflected,

“Show me in American history where all lives have mattered. Show me where there has been ‘liberty and justice for all....’ My goal is to racially unite.... There are kings and queens in all of us. But at the moment, the people who truly need to be realizing their kingdom and queendom are my Black brothers and sisters.... Go out there and be the greatest thing that you can and I guarantee you that it will turn your life around. Sandy Speaks.”

Sandra Bland died in a jail cell on July 13th, 2015, three days after being pulled over for failing to signal, a minor traffic violation. The state trooper that pulled her over failed to follow proper traffic stop procedures and was indicted for perjury for making false statements regarding the circumstances of her arrest. Sandra Bland recorded the incident on her cell phone which remained in police custody. The video surfaced four years later, and was never admitted as evidence during the civil trials. The grand jury declined to indict for a felony.
